Maida Furnia brings over sixteen years of national security experience across four presidential administrations to her role at BGS. Most recently, Ms. Furnia served as the Director for Asia and the Pacific in the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, Treasury’s national security policy formulation arm. In that role, she was responsible for directing strategies and engaging with international partners to disrupt the financing of threats to national security and to protect the international financial system from abuse by illicit actors. Her area of responsibility included China, Taiwan, North Korea, and Afghanistan. During her time at Treasury, Ms. Furnia also served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia and the Middle East. Ms. Furnia is formerly U.S. Head of Delegation to MONEYVAL and to APG (the Asia-Pacific Group on Money Laundering).
Prior to joining the Department of the Treasury, Ms. Furnia was a member of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service. She served as an Economic Officer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reporting on energy issues and working with U.S. and Brazilian petroleum companies. In Tijuana, Mexico, Ms. Furnia served as a Consular Officer conducting visa adjudications, visa fraud investigations, and providing emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Mexico. In Washington, Ms. Furnia taught at the Foreign Service Institute and worked in the Office of Visa Security Screening and in the Bureau of Counterterrorism.
Ms. Furnia holds a Master of International Studies (hons) from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Northern Arizona University. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
